Position:  Controls Design Engineer
Duration/Type: Permanent/Full Time
Work Location: 1241 Strasburg Rd, Kitchener, ON N2R 0S1
Salary: $115,000 per annum; The gross salary paid is subject to applicable Federal & Provincial income taxes & other statutory deductions such as EI and CPP.
Vacation: 4% of the gross salary
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours a week. Overtime rate (X1.5) applicable after 44 hours of work per week

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project managers and other engineers to understand the requirements and objectives of the control system project.
  • Participate in the design and planning phases, including conceptualization, system architecture design, and component selection.
  • Develop PLC programs using programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, or sequential function charts.
  • Configure and program PLCs from various manufacturers, such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, or Schneider Electric.
  • Create and design user-friendly HMIs to allow operators to interact with and monitor the control system.
  • Construct electrical and fluid schematics packages by laying out I/O, designing the magnetics circuits, fusing, controls panel layouts, bills of material, and cable layouts.
  • Detailing the hardware schematics on EPLAN/AutoCAD.
  • Editing machine software programs and duplicate logic from reference.
  • Assist in the machine wiring checkout process and perform small to intermediate machine debugging.
  • Participate in the machine integration and debugging process at the customer’s facility if required.
  • Modify and detail hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication systems.
  • Other duties as required.

Employment Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, automation engineering, or a related field is required.
  • 3-5 years experience working in control automation field including installing, configuring, and commissioning PLC systems in real-world industrial settings.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming languages, such as ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, or sequential function charts. Familiarity with PLC brands like Siemens, Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation), Mitsubishi, or Schneider Electric is required.
  • Experience with designing and programming HMIs using software like Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, WinCC, or Ignition
  • Understanding of electrical schematics, control panel design, motor control circuits, and the ability to work with electrical design software like AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
  • Ability to integrate PLC-based control systems with other components, such as sensors, motors, drives, and SCADA systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to diagnose and resolve issues in PLC-based systems.
  • Moderate communication skills in English language
