Salary: $16.55 per hour; The gross salary paid is subject to applicable Federal and Provincial income taxes and other statutory deductions.
Vacation: 2 weeks per year
Hours of Work: 32.0-40.0 Hours a week; Overtime rate (X1.5) applicable after 44 hours of work per week

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook sweets according to traditional methods/recipes, involving techniques such as boiling, frying, steaming, and baking.
  • Add flavorings such as cardamom, saffron, rose water, or pistachios to enhance the taste and aroma of the sweets.
  • Garnish finished products with nuts, silver leaf (varak), or edible flowers for presentation.
  • Maintain consistent quality in taste, texture, and appearance of the sweets. Regularly taste/test products to ensure they meet the desired standards.
  • Experiment with new recipes, flavors, and presentations to keep up with changing tastes and preferences while also staying true to traditional techniques.
  • Keep track of ingredient inventory, reorder supplies as needed, and manage stock levels to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  • Clean and maintain kitchen equipment such as utensils, pots, pans, and cooking surfaces regularly to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Train and supervise assistant sweet makers or kitchen staff to ensure they follow recipes and maintain quality standards.
  • Stay updated with new techniques, ingredients, and trends in the sweet-making industry

Specific Job Requirements

  • Formal education at a secondary level is desired but not mandatory to apply for the position. Prior workplace training gained through relevant experience, as outlined below, is essential for the role.
  • 7-12 months experience working in a restaurant/sweet shop particularly in the preparation of Indian sweets is required.
  • Familiarity with different types of ingredients used in Indian sweets, such as milk, sugar, flour, ghee, nuts, and spices. Knowledge of flavor combinations and their effects on taste.
  • Job involves standing for extended periods, lifting heavy pots and utensils, and working in a hot environment. Physical stamina is hence important.
  • A strong foundation in cooking and baking is essential. Knowledge of traditional Indian cooking techniques and experience in preparing sweets is highly desired.
